Policy and Procedure for Pass/Fail Grade Option (Spring 2020 Only)

SHU Undergraduates

This Pass/Fail Grade Option pertains to students enrolled in traditional undergraduate courses during Spring 2020 or ADP (session S4) that were offered face-to-face and moved to on-line on March 18, 2020.

Students have the option to petition to change the grading for a course, that meets the above criteria, to Pass/Fail according to the following procedures:

  1. For elective courses, students will submit a request via email to the Registrar. (Include your name, ID, course number and section). If you are unsure if a course qualifies as an elective, consult your academic advisor or the Registrar. Send your request to Shari Mills at smills@setonhill.edu

  1. For non-elective courses which include courses required by your major, minor, or the Liberal Arts Curriculum, you must get approval from your academic advisor. (If you have more than one advisor, consult the first major advisor). When contacting your advisor, share the course and your rationale. Advisors will offer guidance related to the ramifications given your degree requirements especially for discipline accredited programs, affiliate programs such as LECOM, graduate school requirements, etc. If the advisor approves the request, the advisor will forward your request to the Registrar.

Special Circumstances:

  1. Students on academic probation for Spring 2020, must get approval from their academic advisor and the Provost for both elective and non-elective courses. If approved, the Provost will forward the request to the Registrar.

  1. Athletes: Must consult Larry Jesky at jesky@setonhill.edu regarding NCAA compliance.

Please note:

  1. For courses taken as Pass/Fail, no letter grade will be available for reporting on a transcript.

  2. A ‘P” will appear on the transcript for a Pass.

  3. A “U” will appear on the transcript for a Fail.

  4. Courses for which a Pass/Fail (U) designation will not be calculated in the semester or cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average).

  5. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student must earn a minimum of 12 credits with letter grades.
